I recently lost a taste for coffee, maybe because Summer is approaching and it is getting hot in Arizona. A friend recommended Chickory Root Concentrate. I decided to give it a try. I ordered cocoa and vanilla flavors. I did not really know what to expect, but after talking to my friend, it was suggested that they like to mix a ½ tsp in a cup of milk, sort of like chocolate milk. I was very amazed by how tasty it was, and how well the cocoa flavor came through. It was delicious! The Vanilla flavor was equally satisfying. At $25 (Amazon’s price) for an 8.5 oz. bottle, it seemed steep, but on the bottle, it suggested 40 servings. Which roughly breaks down to $0.62 a serving. I think you can get even less than that, as you control how much you use.
The packaging: There are pros and cons here. The two different flavors came in separate packaging but arrived on the same day, the next day. Sadly, they arrived in bubblewrap envelopes. The vanilla-flavored bottle box had been smashed (see photo). The cocoa-flavored box was fine. The bottles are made of a thicker heavy plastic. The product itself had no damage. Maybe instead of bubble-wrap envelopes, a cardboard box would present a better overall shipping experience.
Preparation: These are pretty thick concentrates, a bit thicker than Karo syrup. They came in plastic bottles with flip-top caps that allow for easy pouring into a glass or a spoon. One teaspoon per cup is plenty, and if you mix a small bit of milk and the concentrate in a large glass with a frother, you get the concentrate mixed in well, and create a milky cocoa or vanilla milk foam, and then add regular cold milk to your desired consistency. You are now your own barista with a custom-made drink, made exactly as you want it. It gives you all control and all the flavor, in a sublime experience. I am lactose intolerant, so I use lactose-free milk.
The Taste: I mixed it with cold milk, and it was superb. Overall, this chicory turned out to have a very potent flavor, so both vanilla and chocolate extracts add only a slight hint. The good thing about the concentrate is that you can make your drink as strong or light as you want. This is a solid choice for chicory.
I was very impressed and will buy this concentrate again soon. Hope this is helpful for anyone making a choice on what type of Chickory concentrate to look into. Enjoy.
